Who is VoHCA
History
VoHCAbegan when three people came together in Kingston, ON in March 1998 to share their family tragedies. They decided to form a patient advocacy group because they believed there was a desperate need in Kingston and beyond. They felt that the overwhelming apparent insensitivity within the health care system to provider errors and the devastating effects these 'medical misadventures' have on patients and their families MUST NOT continue. There must be accountability and change to improve the system for the sake of its users, the taxpayers.
Mission Statement
We
will act as the voice for patients in Canada to ensure the health care
system meets their needs.
The
Purpose of VoHCA is
to act nationally as a patient advocacy group by:
1. Providing support at the local level for patients and their families who have had or are having problems with the health care system;
2. Working with the government and health care providers to make the system accountable to the public;
3. Providing current information to allow patients to make informed choices about their care.
What does VoHCA do?
Once functioning we hope to be able to:
· Listen to your concerns
· Connect you with others who have had similar experiences
· Offer support through regular chapter meetings
· Keep you up to date through a quarterly newsletter
· Advocate on your behalf with decision makers
· Liaise with other complementary organizations
· Provide information to members about how to lodge a complaint
· Provide information to decision makers about problems experienced by members
· Educate the public and health care providers ( eg seminars and speakers, assertiveness training for health care consumers, medical malpractice training for lawyers, communication skills and sensitivity for providers)
· Offer
a specialist advisory service of doctors and lawyers
How is VoHCA Funded
At present we depend solely on membership fees and donations.
Future plans include seeking corporate sponsorship of events, applications to Foundations and local fund raising.
